How to Make a Suitcase Last 10 Years or More

A great suitcase is more than something you pack. It becomes a trusted travel companion, moving through airports, across city streets and between countless destinations. With the right design, materials and care, a high-quality suitcase can accompany you for many years.

At Victorinox, every piece of travel gear is engineered for reliability, precision and long-term performance. From the materials we select to the components we use and the extensive testing each case undergoes, every detail is designed to support years of travel.

Here is how a well-made suitcase can last a decade, and how you can help extend its lifespan even further.

Victorinox Travel Gear

Start With High-Quality Materials

Durability begins with the materials used to build a suitcase. The shell or fabric must withstand frequent handling, pressure during packing and the bumps that come with travel.

Victorinox carefully selects materials that combine strength with lightweight performance. Hard-shell suitcases are designed to absorb impact while maintaining their shape, while softside luggage uses resilient fabrics engineered to resist abrasion and wear.

A strong example is the shell material used in the Spectra 3.0 collection. It incorporates SORPLAS™, a high-performance recycled polycarbonate developed and provided by Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation. This advanced recycled polycarbonate offers excellent durability and impact resistance. It makes up to 65% of the shell materials in Spectra 3.0 suitcases, with the remainder consisting of virgin polycarbonate to ensure optimal structural performance.

The interior lining also reflects this attention to detail. The recycled lining fabric is treated with SILVADUR™ technology, which helps inhibit the growth of microorganisms in the fabric. The lining can be cleaned and maintains its treatment for up to 40 washes.

Every material is chosen to perform reliably across many miles of travel.

The Components Matter Just as Much

A suitcase is only as reliable as its smallest parts. Wheels, handles and zippers are used constantly throughout every journey, which is why premium components play an important role in long-term performance.

Many Victorinox cases feature:

  • Hinomoto wheels, engineered in Japan for smooth and quiet 360° movement

  • YKK® zippers, known worldwide for their strength and reliability

  • Telescopic handle systems with Victorinox Stabilizing Technology (VST), designed to enhance stability and provide smooth, controlled handling

Together, these components ensure that your luggage continues to perform smoothly trip after trip.

Travel Gear Testing

Tested for Real Travel Conditions

Before materials and components are selected for our travel gear, they undergo extensive testing to ensure they meet our high quality standards. This process takes place during product development, long before a suitcase reaches the runway or the baggage carousel.

Victorinox travel gear undergoes up to 20 individual tests that simulate real travel conditions, from rough surfaces to temperature extremes.

Examples include:

  • Treadmill tests that simulate rolling over smooth and rough terrain

  • Drop tests from 90 cm to verify shock resistance

  • Corner drop tests to confirm structural strength

  • Handle jerk tests to ensure lifting strength

  • Environmental tests exposing luggage to heat, cold and humidity

These tests replicate years of use and ensure every suitcase is ready for the realities of travel.

Replace Parts Instead of Replacing Your Suitcase

Even the most reliable suitcase experiences wear over time, especially parts that move frequently such as wheels.

To help keep your luggage rolling smoothly, Victorinox now offers genuine replacement wheels that you can install yourself at home. This simple solution allows you to refresh a well-travelled suitcase and extend its usability without replacing the entire case.
