Clothing for rainy days. Or windy. Or sunny.
Take one of the world’s oldest textiles and combine with 21st century innovation. That’s exactly what we’ve done at Victorinox to create our Spring/Summer 2017 Limited Edition collection.
Working with 100% natural and fluorocarbon-free cotton produced by one of our Swiss partners, Development Never Stops, who are based in Zürich, we have created a range of innovative clothing which can protect you from wind and rain, yet is lightweight and airy.
What makes this fabric unique is its unusually high thread-density – when exposed to water, the fiber swells slightly and condenses the fabric to make it water-repellent and wind-resistant. But the fabric stays breathable, so you always feel comfortable, even when the temperatures heat up.
Drawing on this blend of modern and heritage, we’ve crafted clothing that’s both inspired by and made for digital artisans.
The Builders Club vs. Victorinox
We’ve commissioned the Builders Club to create a short film to highlight our Spring/Summer Limited Edition range. The London-based, Swiss/German duo work with both traditional film-making as well as animation techniques to create unique stories and art pieces, making them true digital artisans and ideal partners for Victorinox. Meet Long Nguyen, a Victorinox Digital Artisan
At Victorinox, we are strongly linked to the digital artisan movement. Firmly rooted in our strong heritage, but using technology and pioneering innovation to craft products for the modern age. No one embodies this spirt better than Long Nguyen, our Design Director for Apparel. We asked Long about being a digital artisan, his favorite Victorinox product and about where he draws his inspiration:
What does being a “digital artisan” mean to you?
To me, a “digital artisan” is a person who uses digital substrates and platforms to create and perfect their craft. Whether they’re graphic designers, architects or software engineers, these professionals use digital equipment and code to create something that could not be executed without such technologies. This is something that applies to me in my every day work too.
How are modern and heritage combined in the Victorinox SS17 collection?
Our Spring/Summer 2017 story brings the Victorinox Apparel Collection into the modern day by focusing on the Digital Craft art form. Together with my design team, we have been working with traditional techniques and innovative technology to emphasize the balance between modern and heritage. We preserved the previous season’s nod to workwear, but updated it with innovative fabrics and extended technical construction, such as testing 3D body mapping for improved fit with our Limited Edition pieces, light weight seam sealing, and waterproof zippers.
How is Swissness brought to life in this collection?
Victorinox apparel is a modern interpretation of classic styles. We design products with Swiss style and attitude and bring technical function to everyday clothing.
As a designer, it is essential to always go back to the origins of the brand in order to explore all of its different facets and gather from its heritage the essence of design for each collection we develop. Victorinox is the perfect balance between modern and heritage, the combination of casual elegance and function offering versatility in use and style. In order to be as close as possible to the brand, we have created what we call the Swiss Lab, which is a trip to Switzerland where the design team finds inspiration throughout the heart and home of the Victorinox brand. From the Vitra Design Museum to the Copper Bar in Basel, we were inspired to create various color and design details such as stitching techniques for sweaters and patterns for shirting. We can be inspired by anything on our Swiss Lab trips – the diversity of the landscape, modern and traditional architecture, or the people.
How are the Victorinox brand values represented in the design of these products?
The brand values are embedded in everything we do, not only in the products we develop but also in our mindset. They are part of our DNA and are at the core of our design.
Take our Modular Liner system as an example. This snap-in solution is engineered in house and combines design, function, innovation and quality which are the driving force of all we do.
Sustainability is important to Victorinox. How is it represented in this collection?
You will experience our sustainability efforts through our Repreve denim program as well as in our Limited Edition group which uses a 100% cotton fabric named CottonShell™. We also make use of recycled and all natural materials.
On the supply chain side, all suppliers are audited before we work with them, to check if they comply with Victorinox’s ethical and qualitative criteria. From the cleaning of used water with Bio Particles, to the reuse of water and heat as well as working conditions, we monitor every step in the production process and want to be transparent about it.
How can these products help a cosmopolitan, urban to outdoors lifestyle?
We are particularly proud of our Modular Liner system, our ingenious “snap and go” layering solution that epitomizes modern innovation and multi-purpose functionality. MLS allows you to wear the same piece in countless ways throughout the year, altering its design on demand while being the perfect answer to global climate change.
For on-the-go adaptability, we’ve created the Packaway Jacket: an ultra-light sporty jacket that maximizes freedom and mobility. Water resistant and packable, it’s available in a variety of colors and ensures you are ready for any adventure, no matter the weather. And finally, our Limited Edition collection utilizes a sustainable fabric called CottonShell™ that we are extremely excited about. As shown in the Builders Club film, it boasts properties such as water repellency, wind protection, breathability, and adaptability to extreme temperatures, all while remaining 100% natural cotton, ensuring the optimal comfort of the wearer.

Long’s favorite Victorinox product and why?
Long Nguyen at work – curated by Todd Selby
Photographer, director and author Todd Selby not only took photographs of Long but also interviewed him. Interviews with Todd are quite fun – they are a bit brighter, a bit more curious and surprising than any regular interview.
