Two of our apprentices, Tiziana and Linus share their experiences and explain why they chose an apprenticeship at Victorinox.

How Victorinox trains the next generation of knife experts

We believe that life is better when you are best prepared. And what better way than to prepare our business for the future than training the next generation of experts? With 140 years of experience, we’ve got a lot of knowledge to share too, so we take great pleasure in passing on our skills and craftsmanship to our young apprentices.

The next generation

The Next generation

Tiziana Conte and Linus Muheim they have recently successfully completed their training at Victorinox. Tiziana is a polymechanic and Linus is an automation technician.

They are among the 62 apprentices that Victorinox employ as part of its technical, retail and manual apprenticeships – including the rare cutler apprenticeship.

Tiziana has a strong connection to Victorinox, as both of her grandmothers and her father worked here. She trained as a polymechanic because she likes the diversity and gender balance that Victorinox offers in its technical apprenticeships.

Linus was also attracted by the variety of the training at Victorinox, thanks to the apprenticeship stages working in different departments and learning from a wide variety of experts.

A day in the life of an apprentice

Both Tiziana and Linus love the challenges and surprises their daily work brings. They have to deal with different machines, issues and tasks, which require creativity and problem-solving skills. They also enjoy the balance between manual work, such as milling or cutting, and computer work, such as writing code for programs or controlling systems.

During their training at Victorinox, they also attended school to study subjects like mathematics and physics – the link between these topics and how they apply to their professions is always exciting to discover.

Tips for finding the right apprenticeship

Tiziana and Linus have some advice for anyone who is looking for an apprenticeship. They suggest

  • starting early and exploring different options

  • doing trial apprenticeships at different companies, because the same profession can vary a lot depending on the workplace

  • following your own interests and passions, not what others expect from you.

Jonathan Elias, apprentice instructor at Victorinox, agrees that trial apprenticeships are a good way to ensure realistic expectations on both sides. He says Victorinox doesn’t sugarcoat anything, instead it shows the profession as it really is. This way, it avoids dropouts and ensures high-quality training.

Future Plans

Future prospects

Tiziana and Linus are delighted to have completed their apprenticeships and are looking forward to expanding their knowledge further. Tiziana would like to become a trainer or even run her own business one day. Linus wants to work abroad and discover the world. Both are in agreement: Time flies when you’re having fun learning.
