Legal requirements for swiss army knives and other knives

In Germany, the holding and carrying of knives in public is subject to specific legal provisions and restrictions.

In particular, the holding and carrying of one-hand knives and fixed knives with a blade length of more than 12 cm a knife in public only is permitted if either transported in a locked container or legitimate reasons can be provided.

Subject to numerous exemptions, the holding and carrying of any knives is also prohibited in certain places open to the public.

Further, police regulations allow, under certain conditions, the establishment of so-called weapon ban areas.

However, it is permitted to transport a knife through these places open to the public and weapon ban areas if the knife is not accessible; a knife is not accessible if it can only be reached with more than three hand movements.

In Austria, local restrictions may apply and prohibit the holding and carrying of a knife in certain places open to the public, regardless of legitimate reasons.
