What Does “Swiss Made” Really Mean?

“Swiss Made” is a legally protected designation under Swiss law. It confirms that a watch meets strict requirements regarding its movement, assembly and manufacturing costs.

For more than 100 years, Switzerland has set the benchmark for reliable, high-performance watches. However, not every watch made in Switzerland qualifies as Swiss Made. The label may only be used when clearly defined legal criteria are fulfilled.

The Swiss Made designation is defined by Swiss legislation (Swissness regulation, revised in 2017).

To carry the label, a watch must meet all of the following criteria:

  • The movement is Swiss

  • The watch is assembled in Switzerland

  • The final inspection takes place there

  • At least 60% of manufacturing costs are generated in Switzerland

These requirements ensure that the essential value creation remains in Switzerland.

Why the 60% Rule Matters

Since 2017, at least 60% of a Swiss Made watch’s manufacturing costs must originate in Switzerland.

This percentage is calculated based on production costs — not retail price — and includes development, component production, assembly and quality control. Final assembly and inspection must always take place there.

The 60% rule ensures that Swiss Made remains a meaningful and protected designation.

Swiss Made vs. Swiss Movement – What’s the Difference?

A Swiss Movement applies only to the movement itself. It confirms that the movement is assembled and inspected in Switzerland and meets the 60% Swiss cost requirement.

Swiss Made applies to the entire watch. It confirms that all legal Swiss requirements — including assembly and final inspection — are fulfilled.

Where Are Victorinox Watches Manufactured ?
